Have you heard of this popular club? You may be a member and not be aware of it. To be faithful to God, we must never be a member of this club.
In 2 Timothy 3:7, Paul says some are “ever learning and never coming to a knowledge of the truth.” Many people know facts about and from the Bible. Yet, knowledge must be truthful knowledge. We must be able to draw conclusions from what we have read. There is the truth about worship, the gospel plan to save, the identity of the church, marriage/home, church organization, personal responsibility, etc. We must learn the Bible to the point of being able to identify the doctrine of Christ.
Some are ever looking for perfect conditions and never get around to making a firm decision for the Lord. “He who observes the wind will not sow and he who regards the clouds will not reap” (Eccl.11:4). Some of us are forever putting off obedience, looking for “a more convenient season” (Acts 24:25). Countless times, that convenient time never comes. Too many are looking for motivation beyond the Lord. They look to others to do for them what they lack in themselves. This is not God’s way and such a habit fails to inspire anyone toward greater service.
Others are ever fearful and never courageous. Proverbs 22:13 has the lazy man saying, “I can’t go today, there may be a lion in the street and I will be killed….”
Finally, some are ever observing, but never doing the word (Matt.7:21; James 1:22). There is no lack of self-appointed analyzers, but so few workers (Matt.9:36-39). Plenty there are who “say” they have faith, but without works, their faith is dead (James 2).
Don’t ever be a member of the ever/never club. Be a faithful church member!
