We’ve heard it said – “We are beggars trying to tell other beggars where to find bread.”
As food and water are essential for the human body, so the Lord Jesus is essential for the soul. Christ says, “I am the bread of life; he that comes to me shall never hunger; and he that believes in me shall never thirst” (John 6:35). In fact, God is the source of all life, physical and spiritual (James 1:17), so our need for Him is obvious.
Sinful and without ability to cure the sin-problem, we are desperately dependent upon our Lord’s kindness. The publican was ashamed even to look up to heaven and said, “Lord, be merciful to me a sinner” (Luke 18:13). Recognizing our position, we become “poor in spirit” (Matt.5:3). This word “poor” is used to describe Lazarus, the poor man desiring the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table (Luke 16:19-21). Thus, spiritually, we are beggars.
In these thoughts, we see our mission. Our work is to help people understand their need for Christ and then lead them to know and obey Him (Heb.5:8,9). We are beggars telling other beggars where to find bread.
Though we may not do the same tasks, yet all of us must be involved in this mission of soul winning. If we do not feel comfortable directly teaching someone, we can still be a bringer or preparer or both. Bringing others to classes and assemblies to hear the gospel can bear much fruit for the Lord. Also, sending cards and serving people through good works helps prepare their hearts for further teaching.
–“For the body is not one member, but many” (I Cor.12:14).
